The Massachusetts Legislature’s Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security will hold a public hearing on September 13th at 10:00 a.m. to receive testimony about the need for strengthened gun laws in Massachusetts. This is the last in a series of regional hearings (five in total) to inform the Committee’s work in crafting a bill for consideration by the full House and Senate, with floor debate potentially as soon as this fall.
This hearing is your opportunity to make your voice heard, either by simply attending as a show of support (stickers will be available reading “Save a Life, Stop Gun Violence), or by testifying. You don’t need to be an expert to testify, you just need to tell the Committee how you feel about the issue, why you care, and what you would like to see included in a bill to address gun violence in Massachusetts (sample testimony will be made available to you).
The hearing will be preceded by a press conference at 9:30 a.m. outside of the House Chamber (third floor of the State House). Feel free to join us there before the hearing to show your support. The hearing falls one day prior to the 9-month anniversary of the unimaginable tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Since that day, more than 20,000 more Americans have lost their lives to gun violence. We can do better, and the time to act is now. You can be sure that the gun lobby will continue to turn out for these hearings in force. Don’t let the NRA control this debate any longer. Please take one day out of your busy lives and come to the State House on September 13th – it’s the most important thing you can do to make a difference and bring about the change we need on this issue.
The Massachusetts Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence is a statewide network of groups that are working together to pass meaningful new gun laws in Massachusetts and nationally. For this effort to succeed it is critical that members of the public turn out for this hearing to demonstrate strong public support for these efforts.
If you plan to attend the hearing and would like more information on testifying, please email the Coalition at email@example.com
